| The Père Lachaise Cemetery |
Just three minutes away, the Père Lachaise Cemetery is a haven of peace and greenery. Originally the property of Jesuits, then turned into a graveyard by architect Brongniart in 1804, Père Lachaise harbours many famous graves: those of Chopin, Jim Morrison, La Fontaine, Daudet, Sarah Bernardt, Colette, Proust, Molière, Champollion ... In 1871, the Cemetery unfortunately became notorious through its Mur des Fédérés, a wall against which more than 2,000 Commune fighters were shot. Père Lachaise has been described as "a city of the dead in the midst of the city of the living", with its 44 hectares and 5,000 trees. |

| Bastille, its Square and its Opera |
Eight minutes away, the Bastille area welcomes you day and night. Beyond the Revolutionary events of 1789, the Bastille name is both a symbol and a myth. The Colonne de Juillet (July Column), erected in 1830 in memory of the victims of the "Trois Glorieuses" riots, contains two funerary vaults; it is topped by the Genie of Liberty (who flies away, breaking his irons and holding the torch of civilization in his hand. In the Bastille area, shops, cafés and restaurants have multiplied, particularly since the new Opera was inaugurated. In Rue de Lappe and Rue de la Roquette, famous since the early century for their balls and dances, many shops, restaurants and night-clubs are available for shopping and entertainment.

From the Modern Hotel, Paris offers numerous walking tours and visits: Arsenal Port, Aligre Market, Place de la Nation, Saint Ambroise Church (a roman pastiche dating back to 1869), Théâtre du Temps... |
